There Once Was a Man with a Dream
A recent immigrant from Italy, Danilo Danzo realized the potential of the building’s location, and his dream was born. One day, he would buy the building and transform it into a love letter to his homeland, rich with Italy’s cuisine and fine elements of style. A lofty goal for a man who had little more than a gut instinct that this building could transform the neighbourhood.
Almost three decades later, Danilo’s dream was realized. His instincts were correct: the building revitalized the area, transforming the neighbourhood into a place for businesses to thrive and for locals to enjoy. The Danzo family still owns the hotel—an inspirational example of Danilo’s legacy of positive change and contribution to the community and City of Victoria.
1911
A Building Is Born
Architect L. W. Hargreaves builds the Prince George Hotel, a five-storey brick building in the Edwardian Commercial Style, for influential Chinese-Canadian entrepreneur Lim Bang.
1917
Prohibition Arrives
When prohibition is enacted in 1917, the Prince George Hotel closes—but not for long.
1920
A New Name, A New Era
Reopening as the Hotel Douglas, the hotel continues to welcome workers bound for fisheries and logging camps, as well as visitors discovering Victoria.
1950-1980s
“Victoria’s New Radio Voice”
Taking up headquarters in the hotel, CKDA becomes Victoria’s second radio station and eventually British Columbia’s first FM radio station.
2007–2009
A New Chapter
Returning to the hotel where his family once stayed in the 1960s, Danilo Danzo purchases and restores the property, transforming it into the Hotel Rialto—a place where history and hospitality meet.
